The dynamics of the filtered particle size range in filter-feeding macroinvertebrates

  • Description of the research topic:

Filter feeding organisms play a key role in almost all aquatic ecosystems. Several local and global anthropogenic disturbances, such as chemical pollution, impoundments, climate change, invasive species and microplastics affect filter feeders directly or through changes in the quantity and quality of suspended matter, which they mediate towards higher trophic levels. Filter mesh size is an easily measurable functional trait which allows comparison among taxa and populations, providing important insights into the structure and dynamics of the filter feeding functional group. The aim of the research is establishing the connection between filter mesh size and the particle size distribution of suspended matter based on field samples, and revealing the mechanism of adaptation to different food particle sizes by laboratory experiments.
