Relation between functional patterns and environmental variables in the benthic and planktonic algae communities of Hungary’s surface waters

  • Description of the research topic

“Functional traits are proxies of adaptation strategies. If there is a change in the environmental conditions, the composition of the community changes as well. This change can be studied not only due to the species composition but also due to functional traits. In fact, in certain cases the measure of change of functional traits responds better to the change of environmental variables than the shift experienced in species composition. In the scope of the PhD topic we evaluate and explore the relation between functional patterns and environmental variables in case of the phytobenthos communities of Hungary’s surface waters and the phytoplankton communities of the Danube with multivariate data analysis and with various statistical methods. Furthermore, we investigate the type of changes on spatial and temporal scale particularly focusing those that can be induced by climate change.”
