Description of the research topic
Molecules confined in microscopic optical or plasmonic cavities can strongly interact with the quantized cavity mode, forming so-called polaritonic states, in which the eigenstates of matter and light are coherently mixed. These hybrid light-matter states can show promising features with potential applications in chemistry, for example, the formation of polaritons can influence molecular structure and chemical reactivity. The aim of this theoretical research project is to use the tools of quantum chemistry and quantum optics to investigate (1) how the formation of polaritons change molecular partition functions and thermochemical properties, (2) the effects of cavity-mediated indirect coupling between different molecules contributing to collective polaritonic states, (3) the role of cavity loss and dissipative processes, (4) spectroscopy of the confined molecules, etc.
