Heterogeneous catalytic conversion of oxygenates of biomass origin to biofuels and other value-added chemicals

  • Description of the research topic

Over the past decades, the increasing energy and consumer product demand of mankind, the continuous depletion of fossil fuel resources (gas, oil and coal), and the increasing fuel prices raised concerns about the sustainability of economy and initiated intensive research for alternative renewable sources of transportation fuels and feedstock for chemical industry. Best candidates for such sources are the non-food wastes and residues of agriculture, forestry and food production industry. As this biomass can be decomposed into sugars and subsequently into platform compounds and finally to biofuels and other value-added chemicals using various chemical and fermentation processes. The proposed research investigates the mechanism and the kinetics of chemical conversion processes of platform compounds using experimental, theoretical and kinetic modelling methods.
