Description of the research topic:
Nowadays taxonomic research uses much information coded in the DNA, sometimes at the genomic level. We can safely say molecular taxonomy is now part of the everyday’s life of a taxonomist. In our lab, operating at the University of Debrecen, we are conducting evolutionary genetics researches starting from Sanger-sequencing to population genetic analyses based on microsatellite markers and to genomic approaches including whole-genome re-sequencing and reduced representation (RAD-seq) approaches. We are seeking PhD-students with practice in a molecular lab for studying phylogenetics of taxonomically challenging plants and animals. During the PhD studies, the candidate will have an opportunity to conduct evolutionary genetics researches using the above techniques with a clear emphasis on genomic methods. We routinely use DNA-sequencing to resolve taxonomic issues, use microsatellites to understand the population genetics of endangered populations, and use an anonymous, reduced-representation genomic technique (RAD-seq) to characterise population genetic variability at the genomics level. There is also a possibility to assemble a draft genome in certain focal species. The applicant can choose from research topics that are proposed by taxonomic experts but surely can bring his/her study group.
