Conservation Genetics of endangered plants and animals

  • Description of the research topic:

Starting from resolving issues with taxonomic uncertainties to classical conservation genetics using population genetics (including assessment on genetic diversity and populations structure) and to the utilisation of genomic tools, there is a possibility to join our team of evolutionary geneticists at our lab at the University of Debrecen. We are seeking PhD-students with practice in a molecular lab for studying conservation genetics of endangered plants and animals. During the PhD studies, the candidate will have an opportunity to conduct evolutionary genetics researches using the above techniques with a clear emphasis on genomic methods. We routinely use DNA-sequencing to resolve taxonomic issues, use microsatellites to understand the population genetics of endangered populations, and use an anonymous, reduced-representation genomic technique (RAD-seq) to characterise population genetic variability at the genomics level. There is also a possibility to assemble a draft genome in certain focal species. The applicant can choose from research topics that are proposed by Hungarian nature conservation professionals.
