Description of the research topic:
Several age-dependent human diseases are associated with dysregulated autophagy. Furthermore, several proteins (e.g., Parkin and Huntingtin) that involve in neurodegenerative pathologies also have function in the autophagic process, most frequently in selective types of autophagy. Based on these data, autophagy has become a drug target in current pharmacological research. However, in the case of some age-dependent diseases it could be harmful to trigger the early steps of autophagy. These vesicles may contribute to the maturation and aggregation of toxic intracellular proteins. One possible way to activate autophagy is through the enhancement of later phases of autophagy. Our aim is to discover new downstream regulation points where autophagy could be specifically activated and test these potential drug targets in ageing and neurodegenerative disease models of Drosophila.
