The Group has successfully completed a 5-year investment plan amounting to €3bn, including the upgrade of the Elefsina Refinery, the largest private manufacturing investment in Greece. The new refinery has a significant impact on the Group’s profitability, while accruing multiple benefits for the environment, the employment and the national economy.
The refining sector is the Group’s core activity, accounting for approximately 62% of the capital employed. In Greece, the Group owns three out of the four refineries operating in the country, holding approximately 65% of the Greek oil products wholesale market. It also owns the sole refinery in Skopje, North Macedonia.
The Group’s domestic refineries in Aspropyrgos, Elefsina and Thessaloniki cover approximately 65% of the country’s total refining capacity, with a composite Nelson complexity index of 9.3.
Their location (coastal refineries) and high complexity give them the competitive advantage of easy access to and processing of all types of crude oil that are available in the region. Furthermore, the logistics infrastructure offers a storage capacity of 7 million m3 for crude and products.

Person 1: Spyros Kiartzis, PhD, received his Diploma in Electrical Engineering and his PhD in Power Systems Analysis from the School of Engineering; and his degree on Economics from the School of Law and Economics; all from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and his MBA from the Hellenic Open University. Upon graduation, he joined the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki as a researcher and later as an instructor. Currently, he gives lectures in the International Hellenic University. His research interests are in industrial power systems, in renewable energy, in energy economics and in energy sector deregulation policy. He joined the “Hellenic Petroleum S.A.” in 2001 where he held a range of posts in maintenance and project construction sections (including the Project Management Team for the construction of a 390 MW CCPP), before becoming Director of Alternative Energy Sources and New Technologies. He is member of the Board of Directors of the “Hellenic Petroleum Renewable Energy Sources S.A.” (subsidiary of Hellenic Petroleum Group) and has served as member of the Board of Directors of “EKO Bulgaria S.A.” (subsidiary of Hellenic Petroleum Group). Since 2013 Vice Chairman and CEO of Energiaki Pylou – Methonis S.A. wind park. He also serves as member of the Board or Consultant in the technical and financial sector.
Person 2: Evgenia Leivadarou, PhD, received her Diploma in Civil Engineering and her MSc in Water Resources Management from the National Technical University of Athens; her MPhil in Economics of Infrastructures and her PhD in Mathematics for Green Technologies from the University of Cambridge. She has more than 10 years of experience in EU, UN and WB projects. She is specialized in infrastructure design, patents, environmental protection and green industrial solutions for lower GHG emissions. She joined “Hellenic Petroleum S.A.” in 2019, as an Engineer for New Technologies and Innovation and she is responsible for evaluating research proposals, coordinating research projects and the potential of alternative technologies in refineries, alternative energy sources and e-mobility.
